With winter finally/eventually coming to a close, we can all look forward to the launch of this years Spring/Summer collections. But what can we expect to see in the upcoming months from the big brands and major designers in 2017? We spoke to two of our favourite plus size fashion designers – Yona New York and Anna Scholz – who are devout shoppers themselves, about what they loved in 2016 and what they hope to see more of in the year ahead.
It’s all about diversity
Yona New York: I love fashion, and follow all the designers during Fashion Week (2016). I loved seeing some exciting and different model choices. From old to young, long hair to no hair, and all ethnicities. I enjoyed seeing at least some variety on the runway. There is so much more room to grow though. When we see runway shows that actually feature body diversity as well then I think we will be able to see all women get properly represented.
A good jacket will always be a “must-have”
YNY: A leather jacket, a great pair of booties, and anything leopard print. These three pieces can take any look and turn it into a million bucks.
Anna: Bomber Jackets and chic leisurewear (sport de luxe) were big (in 2016) and will continue. We launched a cool silver leather bomber jacket which is a great statement piece. Animal print never goes away and keeps coming back in new hues and scales, and this is definitely the year of the dress.
Throwback trends are still popular
YNY: Turtlenecks, slip dresses, and velvet. I loved seeing some of my favourite 90s trends come back in 2016 and am looking forward to seeing more. And I have a sneaky feeling they will continue in 2017. (wink wink)
Anna: I am in love with our merino/cashmere knitwear worn with our 70s flared smart jeans which have been flying out. I am also a fan of our new range of black dresses, drapey knotted jersey styles are super flattering or the chic utility zip dress, you can never have enough black dresses.
It’s not just about what you wear, but how you wear it
YNY: You’ve gotta feel great. Take a piece you love and feel comfortable in and change the accessories. Throw on a scarf or a statement necklace, and some great shoes and you are chic without trying. Styling doesn’t have to be hard. Start with what you can, and as you get better you will be able to style an outfit before you even have it on.
Anna: Confidence is key and is what makes a woman beautiful. Plus Size Women have embraced fashion and social media in the last few years and have started loving their bodies and accentuating their curves. I don’t want to see any more hiding away or body shaming. Dress for your mood and don’t be afraid to experiment. Never go for the boring option. Enjoy being a woman.
